OYA’MI

 

        The Oromo Youth Association of Michigan (OYA'MI) was established in June 2014. We believe, the establishment of OYA, will benefit the youth and the Oromo community members in moving forward and doing great things that uphold the unity of our community here in the state of Michigan and beyond. The objectives of the OYA are as follows:

 

• To bring the Oromo youth in the state of Michigan together in order to learn from and teach each other about the Oromo culture, history, identity, language, and values. To strengthen the networking between the Oromo youth in Michigan through promotion of the Oromo core values  

• We, the Oromo youth of Michigan, have the responsibility to follow and address what is going on in Oromia through networking.

• The Oromo people have been under the tyranny of dictatorship for so many years, and they have been marginalized, pushed out of their homes and lands; they have become landless and poor. It is our responsibility as the diaspora Oromo youth to be the voice of the oppressed voiceless. We should stand with the Oromo people of Oromia in solidarity and expose the injustices against them.  We must make sure that the world knows what they are going through.

• The root of our culture and Language and tradition is in Oromia, and the immediate source of our culture, language and values here in diaspora are our parents and elders. So we must learn from them.
